Pepple's Potager August 26, 2020 Garden Update
I planted these this year, and based on your video, I'm guessing that I've overplanted them too 😂 I may pull a couple of the plants out while they're smaller. Oh well, better too many than not enough!
Yeah, it's better to have too many than not enough lol. Although you can prune the vines, I guess, I just let them go
I’ve been watching too many gardening videos but I see you remove some suckers and leaves not right at the stem Seems like a good idea any reason?
Maybe because I planted them so close together, I decided to thin the foliage a bit.
Growing both of these variety this year. Thank you for the vid!
Nice healthy plants! Cherokee purples are awesome!
Big Thumbs up 👍
I could really use a 4 x 8 bed with the trellis down the middle. Looks ideal. Thats a great layout.
Wow! Absolutely impressive. I love your garden and seeing what you are up to!
😃🎉 Excellent I subscribed to your channel 🙏
Thank you so much 😊
Good video. I've never been able to get Blue Lake beans to grow, but after watching this video I'm almost tempted to try again. They never germinate for me. Some say you should soak the beans before planting, I've tried planting the beans straight out of the package, and I've tried soaking them 4 hours, or soaking overnight before planting. Not one has ever germinated, ever. I'm in Virginia, and I've planted them in mid or late May so it should be warm enough.
Those seedlings look so lovely and healthy! I wasn't able to sow my seeds on time this year. 😢 Last year, my habanero seedlings were much smaller than the others as well.
Thank you! Yeah I'm actually 2-3 weeks behind myself. I probably won't get the larger sweet peppers until August. So are habaneros usually smaller plants than the rest?
@@PepplesPotager Last year was my first attempt to grow habaneros, so I'm answering based on my limited experience & research, but my understanding is that habaneros (and other Chinense peppers) grow even more slowly than other peppers (the Anuums, for example). So they're small for a long period but catch up if your growing season is long enough. I'm in zone 6a (now 6b) and start my peppers on March 5th (usually), to transplant out around May 15th. Last year, I was still waiting for my habanero plants to produce when the first frost rolled around. Disappointing, to say the least! To address this for or habaneros/other Chinense peppers, I will sow seeds in February (possibly late January) moving forward.
Yeah! I'm 6b as well, and I haven't planted the habaneros yet. I may put them in patio pots, though. Guess we'll see how it goes, but it looks like they will be really late then lol
@@PepplesPotager Definitely on the later side! Lol. Of course, last season was wacky with all of the Canadian wildfire smoke, unseasonably cool temps and extra rain that came with that. I wish I'd had a chance to sow on time this year because the other factors are much better so far this season. I do think a pot is a great idea and that's how I'm planting all of my peppers now.
Was very glad to find this video, I am growing Blue Lake for the first time this year... first time growing pole beans actually, have grown dwarf varieties before. They seem to be doing okay! it's nice to see a seed to harvest log to compare with.
Thank you so much! I am glad you liked it.
I have squirrel issues too! I bought a metal frame chicken coop totally enclosed with chicken wire.... going to try my sweet corn in there with watermelon. If it works it will be the best $80 I've ever spent! Amazon has some for $120 . I may get another one or two if this works and have my entire garden protected!!! 🤞
Can you tell me what soil you use for seed starting and when you transplant to the 4” pots?
How does Silver Queen do with Corn Smut? Do you notice it develops more of it than other varieties?
It's been a while since I've done this video and grown silver queen but I don't recall having a problem with it.
Weird, your podcast is a blank black page. I cannot watch it.
Podcast? I don't have a podcast. Just a UA-cam and Instagram.
For your tomatoes, how many of each variety do you plant?
I usually plant about 8 each of the larger tomatoes. The cherry tomatoes probably about 4 each. What I have left over I sell or give away.
Great to see you! Awesome variety. I started my tomatoes and peppers way too early again they are huge. I hope they go into the garden well
Thank you so much! I started my peppers and tomatoes later this year than usual. I'll have to stop by your channel. It's been a while. I'm sure your tomatoes will do just fine.
I was just thinking of your channel and wondering how your garden was faring and here you are! I'm waaay behind on sowing everything. I'm going to plant anyway but very encouraging to see your young pepper plants.
I'm actually a bit behind myself. I usually start earlier than this.
Why Epsom salt and why not bone meal and gypsum ? Looking at your grow plants it is hard to argue with how healthy your tomatoes are~!
I've never used gypsum, but Jobes Tomato and Vegetables Fertilizer has bone meal in it. Epsom salt helps with magnesium deficiency and supposedly helps tomatoes taste better.
Do you do any pruning of the suckers and bottom leaves???
Best video I've watched. I like it when people show start to harvest.
Thank you!
Many thanks, I have learned much from this video. great work..
Great video! I'm a farmer debating buying this variety and giving it a go this summer. I think you sold me.
Yeah! They seem to be very productive.
Am I too late to start planting from seed ? I’m from Long Island,New York
No. You have plenty of time to start peas .
They would be ready to pick by June. You could probably plant a 2nd crop in the fall too.
Love em both
thank you! 🌻
Your welcome!
How much weight do you think you harvested off them?
I'm really not sure. Wish I would weighed them to keep track.
@@PepplesPotager hmm any form of mental estimation? How many bags, buckets..handfuls? I’m starting my peas now and would love to know!
That snap when you were picking them made my mouth water. I wanted to take a bite of those fresh crisp pea pods😂
They are good and sweet right off the vine 😋
I have some of these on the way !
so glad I found you. I've been trying for the first time to grow them indoors and its been over 90 days and nothing yet.. but thanks for this.. wish you could tutor me on how to care for them indoors - watering and light etc
Would you suggest the baby patio or black beauty variety for a first timer on a raised bed garden?
Patio Baby Eggplants are very easy to grow and very prolific. 25 - 50 eggplants per plant. They are about 3 inch fruits.
Awesome man! I didn’t know they were determinate. Really appreciate the knowledge 💪🏽
Your welcome!
I had Jap Beetle issues. Milky spore eradicated them nicely.
I would trim some of those leaves and this will help them ripen quicker
Zzzzzzzzzzz
Short season, deer, pheasants and voles are the bane of my kandy korn and other crops. Finally planted the kandy korn inside electrified poultry netting after moving the chickens out. I will be harvesting those nine foot tall purple corn plants in a couple more days. Unbelievable heavy yield for so late a planting I only intended for an ornamental use. Gotta love the Kandy Korn!
Isnt that a bit close..1 per sq ft
Lovely setup friend. Nice to meet you, too.
Thank you!
So vibrant and beautiful! 🫑
Thank you!
Beautiful
Thank you!
I can’t believe you just grew those in your back yard. Fuckin little house on the prairie over here
That's fucking funny 🤣🤣🤣
He's my handsome Charles Ingalls
I was wondering about spacing of tomatoes in my square foot garden. Mel's book assigns just one square foot per plant but that seemed unrealistically small. Another resource I consulted indicated I should give 4 square feet per plant, which was more than I wanted to allocate! So it's very helpful to me to see how you did this IRL. Thanks SO much!
I grow mine 1 per square foot. I prune them to one main stem and tie them to the trellis. It's best to use indeterminate plants when planting 1 per square foot. Determinate plants may take up to 4 square feet depending on which tomato you grow cause they are meant bush out and grow to predetermined height.
@@PepplesPotager Thanks! I was actually thinking maybe I should try determinates, bc they might take less space. D'oh! Saw your response in the nick of time!! Thanks again!!
LOVE THIS
Thank you so much!
Do you start all of your plants from seed?
I started all my plants from seed this year except the Stawberries, Cucumbers, and Squash. I started those from Bonnie Plants. Mostly because I got behind in my gardening due to other projects going on.
Thanks for sharing. Can we get more panoramic views of the garden . Enjoy your harvest
Sure can. I may do a short sometime this week with a wider view
Thanks for your videos! What zone are you in? Thanks for the reminder that we can propagate the strawberries! Forgot about that.
Thanks for watching! I live in zone 6b.
I think it looks pretty. I like how bushy it is. Can't wait to see what mine looks like.
Thank you! Hope yours turns out great.
Do you prune your tomatoes?
Yes I do. I try to keep them pruned to one main stem.
growing purple cherokees this year and plan on saving the seeds. Want to try mortgage lifters next year too i think. A farmer i work for sometimes grows some so i think ill get some seeds form him
Mortgage Lifters were very prolific for me. They won't disappoint.
You have an awesome setup! Any updates coming soon?
Yeah, probably this weekend or maybe sooner.
